The word simulation means that the SMS is more than just a game. The SMS is a tool that teachers can use to help instruct their students in the world of economics, finance, current events, math, social studies, and technology.
Students receive a hypothetical $100,000 in a brokerage account. For a 10 week period students buy and sell stocks and mutual funds and learn about economic principles and how they apply to the financial markets. Students compete against other students on the basis of their portfolio performance and are eligible to win prizes.
The SMS is offered by state Councils/Centers on Economic Education,by local newspapers, and by Stock-Trak. Today there are approximately 200,000 K-12 students using the SMS each year.
